SURREY – Investigators from the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) have completed their initial investigative activities in Campbell River and have returned to the Surrey location.

The IIO deployed five investigators to Campbell River early December 2, 2012 after being notified of a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a RCMP vehicle.

At approximately 2:05 a.m. on December 2, 2012, Campbell River RCMP observed an adult male who was allegedly operating a motorcycle along Dogwood Street at a high rate of speed.  RCMP in the area subsequently utilized a police vehicle to block the two centre lanes of Dogwood Street just south of Second Avenue.  The male operating the motorcycle continued and turned westbound onto Evergreen Street.  At a point approximately 800 metres west of Dogwood Street, a collision occurred between the operator of the motorcycle and a RCMP vehicle, during which the operator of the motorcycle sustained serious head injuries and was transported to hospital.  He remains under medical care.

IIO investigators attended the scene and completed standard investigative tasks including interviewing police and civilian witnesses and securing evidence from the RCMP vehicle data recorder.

With respect to the IIO investigation, the IIO and the Campbell River RCMP are working within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July, 2012.  The RCMP in Campbell River continue to have jurisdiction for the concurrent investigation into the actions of the motorcycle operator.

Any potential witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.
