New Deployments (1; jurisdiction pending)

On August 27, RCMP in Tsay Keh Dene responded to a complaint involving an adult male and what was believed to be a motor vehicle incident. It became evident that the male was experiencing a medical event and he was transported to a medical facility. His condition continued to deteriorate and the affected person died later that morning. The IIO has initiated a preliminary investigation to determine if there was a nexus between the affected person’s injuries and the officer’s actions; as such, jurisdiction has not yet been sustained.

New Investigations (5; jurisdiction sustained)

On August 29, two RCMP officers in Cranbrook became involved in a physical altercation with an adult male while attempting to take him into custody. Following his arrest, the affected person was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with serious injuries. The IIO has asserted and sustained jurisdiction for the investigation.

On August 25, VPD were responding to a complaint involving an adult male. An adult female who was walking by and who was not involved in the complaint, was reportedly knocked to the ground by the male. She sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital. The IIO was notified immediately and has asserted and sustained jurisdiction over the investigation.

On August 23, an adult male in Prince George sustained serious injuries as a result of a bite from a police dog. According to the RCMP, the male was bitten after he struck an off duty officer (and dog handler) who had stopped to render aid to the male. The male was taken to hospital for treatment. The IIO asserted and sustained jurisdiction over the investigation into the actions of the officer. The RCMP maintains responsibility for the investigation into the alleged actions of the affected person.

On August 8, West Shore RCMP responded to complaint involving an adult female. As a result of this complaint, the RCMP decided to transport the affected person home to her residence in Metchosin. Once at the residence, while still under the care and control of the officer, the affected person fell and sustained serious injuries. She was hospitalized for treatment, however she died in hospital on August 26. The IIO has asserted and sustained jurisdiction for the investigation.

On June 8, an adult male sustained serious injuries while in the custody of the Oceanside RCMP. The incident was subject to an investigation by the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, whose investigator clarified the extent of the male’s injuries and notified the IIO on August 26. The IIO has asserted and sustained jurisdiction for the investigation.
