Independent Investigations Office
For Immediate Release
Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirms it has been notified of a motor vehicle incident that occurred earlier this morning in Kelowna.
Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that on June 20, 2018, at approximately 3:20 a.m., an officer was conducting a routine patrol along Highway 33 when he observed a vehicle travelling at high speed and driving erratically.
Shortly thereafter the vehicle crossed into oncoming lanes and struck a wall, ejecting three of the occupants. The officer called Emergency Health Services immediately and the driver and three passengers were subsequently transported to the hospital with what is believed to be serious injuries.
The RCMP is conducting a concurrent investigation into alleged offences that may have been committed leading up to this incident.
Any potential witnesses are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
