IIO Deploys To Lillooet Incident (2020-044)

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of BC was notified of the death of a female adult that occurred in police presence in the Lillooet area. As a result, the IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions may have played in the death of the female.

Background:
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

IIO seeking witnesses to an incident in Victoria (IIO 2020-36)

Victoria – The Independent Investigations Office of BC is seeking witnesses to an arrest in Victoria.

The incident occurred on February 16, 2020 at approximately 10:00pm when Victoria PD officers arrested two males on the wharf near Harbour Air in front of the restaurant Red Fish Blue Fish. One male resisted arrest and, after a struggle, was taken into custody.

The IIO was notified later that evening and clarified that the male had sustained an injury which met the definition of serious harm. The focus of the IIO investigation is determining what role, if any, the officers’ actions may have played into the serious harm of the male.

The IIO is asking that any witnesses to this incident, including a witness who assisted officers during the arrest, contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.

IIO Deploys to Incident in Clinton (IIO 2020-041)

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was notified of a police-involved incident in Clinton, BC.

RCMP reported that on February 23, 2020, just before 5:00 pm, officers were called to a residence for a possible break and enter in progress.

As a result of the police attendance, a male was arrested. During that arrest the male was injured as a result of receiving a police dog bite that required surgery to repair.

The IIO was notified and have commenced an investigation and, having clarified the extent of the injury, will continue to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions may have played into the serious harm of the male.

IIO Deploys to Lower Mainland Incident that ended in West Vancouver (IIO 2020-042)

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was notified of a police-involved incident that spanned multiple police jurisdictions.

RCMP reported that on February 26, 2020, just before 2:00 pm, officers were attempting to arrest a male on outstanding warrants. The male fled in his vehicle and led the police from Abbotsford into West Vancouver near the Capilano River bridge where he was arrested.

During that arrest the male was injured as a result of receiving a police dog bite that required surgery to repair.

The IIO was notified and have commenced an investigation to determining what role, if any, the officers’ actions may have played into the serious harm of the male.
