SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that it will investigate an incident involving the Victoria Police Department.

On the evening of May 5, 2013, a collision involving a motorcycle and an unmarked police vehicle occurred at Chatham Street and Government Street.  The adult female operator of the motorcycle sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.

The Victoria Police Department reported the incident to the IIO immediately after it occurred.  Upon reviewing the available information the IIO suspended the determination of jurisdiction, pending the receipt of further information.   On June 18, 2013, the Chief Civilian Director reassessed the statements provided by witnesses and determined that the actions of an officer may have contributed to the collision.  Based on this reassessment, the IIO asserted jurisdiction and will conduct an investigation.        The Victoria Police Department remains responsible for any investigation into the alleged actions of the affected person.  The IIO and the Victoria Police Department will work co-operatively within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July 2012.

Please note that no further information is available at this time.
