SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms it has deployed investigators to an incident involving the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

According to preliminary information reported by the VPD, at 10:00 a.m. this morning, VPD officers and health services responded to a complaint of an adult male near East Cordova and Main Street.  The affected person was reportedly distraught and threatening to harm himself.  As police entered the residence, the affected person reportedly grabbed an object; he subsequently sustained serious injuries to his neck. He was restrained and was provided emergency medical care prior to being  transported to hospital.

IIO investigators will be in the area gathering any physical evidence, identifying witnesses and conducting other preliminary investigative activities.

The IIO and the VPD will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July 2012.  As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations, and ensure transparency through public reporting.

Due to the preliminary stage of the investigation, no additional information is available.
