IIO Closes Preliminary Investigation in Nanaimo

SURREY – The IIO confirms that it will not proceed with an investigation into an incident in Nanaimo.

On April 27, 2013, the IIO was notified of an incident involving the Nanaimo RCMP and Police Dog Services.  In response to a complaint, officers encountered two adults who were allegedly fleeing from a stolen vehicle.  Officers deployed a police service dog and during the subsequent arrest, both adults received injuries. One female adult was treated and released from hospital.  The male affected person received more serious dog bite injuries.

IIO investigative staff was deployed to Nanaimo and initiated an investigation.  Through preliminary investigative activities, IIO investigators were able to clarify that while the incident was officer related, the affected person’s injuries did not meet the definition of serious harm as defined in the Police Act.  Given that determination, jurisdiction was not sustained and the IIO investigation was closed with no further action.

The Nanaimo RCMP maintains jurisdiction over any concurrent investigation into the actions of the affected persons.
