Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded an investigation into an incident in Courtney.
As our initial release indicates, on June 9, 2020 at approximately 10:50 p.m., officers responded to a call from a person concerned about the health and safety of a man who reportedly had a firearm in a hotel room located in the 1100-block of Cliffe Avenue. The man initially communicated with police but then discontinued communications and re-entered the hotel room. He returned to the doorway of the room with a firearm. Despite officer attempts to re-initiate communication, the man shot himself and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence and determined that the independent evidence, including civilian witness and video sources, make it clear that police actions did not cause the death of the man. As a result, the investigation has been concluded.
