IIO Concludes Investigation into 2022 Police-Involved Shooting in Surrey (2022-119)

Case: 2022-119 Incident Date: May 24, 2022 Agency: RCMP Location: Surrey Detachment: Surrey Incident Classification: Serious Harm Case Status: Closed - Without Public Report

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into a police-involved shooting that occurred on May 24, 2022 in Surrey (IIO 2022-119).

At about 12:00 p.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of a woman who was reportedly in possession of a weapon near the intersection of King George Boulevard and 104a Avenue.

When an officer arrived, an interaction occurred, and shots were fired by police.

The woman sustained gunshot injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment where she survived.

The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including witness statements, video and police reports – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.

The IIO investigation is now concluded. Due to a concurrent police investigation, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO’s website until that process has concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
