Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now closed its investigation (IIO 2022-196) into a serious collision near the Burnaby and New Westminster border that resulted in the serious injuries of two people and deaths of two others.

On July 26, 2022, Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a Nissan Altima. The vehicle was then involved in a collision with a Toyota Yaris at the intersection of 10th Avenue and 6th Street.

The two occupants of the Toyota were seriously injured in the collision and were pronounced deceased at the hospital. The male driver and female passenger of the Nissan were also transported to the hospital with injuries.

The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including forensic scene analysis, video footage, medical records, and police information – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.

Due to concurrent police investigation related to the incident, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO website until that process has concluded.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
