For Immediate Release

Surrey, B.C. – The Chief Civilian Director (CCD) of the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded an investigation into an incident in Dawson Creek.

As described in the IIO’s previous release, on April 5, 2021 at approximately 9:45 p.m., police received a report regarding a possibly impaired driver in a black GMC Sierra pickup truck. The truck was observed by an officer in the 700-block of 100B Avenue and a traffic stop was attempted unsuccessfully.

Minutes later, the truck went through an external wall and entered a business in the 11000-block of 8th Street, causing injuries to two women inside.

The CCD has reviewed the medical evidence and determined that the women’s injuries do not meet the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act. The IIO investigation is therefore concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
