Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded an investigation into an incident in Kamloops.

On October 14, 2020 at approximately 4:35 p.m., police responded to a request for assistance regarding the behaviour of an elderly woman at a residential building in the 1800-block of Greenfield Avenue. When officers arrived at the woman’s unit, she answered the door while in possession of a weapon. An officer took the weapon from her and during that interaction, the woman sustained an injury. She was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.

The IIO’s Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the medical evidence and determined that the woman’s injury does not meet the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act. The investigation is therefore concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
