Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into a motor vehicle incident that occurred in Courtenay (IIO 2025-113).

On April 29, 2025, an RCMP officer driving an unmarked police SUV was responding to a call. While driving, the officer was involved in a collision with an unrelated vehicle near the intersection of Piercy Avenue and 26th Street.

The officer continued driving to the initial call for service, later returning to the scene of the collision and speaking with the man who had been driving the other vehicle. The man was taken by ambulance to the hospital for assessment.

The Chief Civilian Director has now reviewed medical evidence collected by IIO investigators and determined that the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold for serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
