Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into the arrest of a man in Surrey on May 9, 2025 (IIO 2025-124).

At around 1:30 p.m., members of the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit responded to a disturbance call at a residential building near 34 Avenue and 152 Street.

After arriving, officers located one man who had reportedly been in possession of a weapon and moved to detain him under the Mental Health Act.

The man suffered injuries during the arrest process and was then taken to a hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and commenced an investigation.

The delegate of the chief civilian director has now reviewed medical evidence collected by IIO investigators and determined that the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold for serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
