Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into the injury of one woman while being arrested in Vancouver (IIO 2024-265).
At about 3:50 p.m. on November 17, 2024, a 911 call reported that there was a person with a weapon on a bus who was alleged to be threatening other passengers.
The bus stopped near Fraser Street and E 41 Avenue, where the woman was arrested by members of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police. The woman sustained an injury while being taken into custody and Emergency Health Services took her to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and commenced an investigation to determine the seriousness of the woman’s injury.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including medical information, a statement from the affected person, video footage from the bus, and police reports – and determined that the woman’s injury does not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
