Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2024-045 into the death of one man in Burnaby on February 28, 2024.

At about 12:17 a.m., police and Emergency Health Services (EHS) responded to a call on the 2200 block of Douglas Road to treat an unconscious male.

The man regained consciousness, but police then arrested him on an unrelated matter.

Shortly after that, the man again lost consciousness. EHS attempted life-saving measures, but the man was later pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified of the incident the same day.

Evidence collected during the investigation shows the man’s death is attributed to pre-existing medical conditions prior to the arrest and not the result of any action or inaction on the part of the police.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.
