IIO Concludes Investigation into December Arrest in Victoria (2025-291)

Around 12:30 p.m., officers with the Victoria Police Department responded to a complaint about a man who was reportedly a suspect in a series of alleged assaults near Johnson and Wharf streets.
Police arrived, located the man and arrested him, placing him in the back of a police vehicle.
Upon arrival at cells, police noticed the man required medical assistance and called for paramedics. The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital for assessment and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and began an investigation.
The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including medical records, police reports and witness accounts – and has determined that there was no connection between police action or inaction and the man’s injuries.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
