Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now closed investigation 2024-133, related to an incident involving one man in Surrey.

At about 12:35 p.m. on June 11, 2024, members of the Surrey Police Service and Surrey RCMP attended a building in the 9000 block of 128th Street to check on the wellbeing of the affected person (AP).

The AP appeared to be in distress at the time police arrived and would not put down items in his possession. Officers then moved to detain the AP under the Mental Health Act, using force, including a conducted energy weapon. The AP was later transported to a hospital for a mental health assessment.

The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including medical records, and police information – and determined the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm as defined under Part 11 of the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
