IIO Concludes Investigation into June Arrest in Abbotsford (2025-156)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into the arrest of a man in Abbotsford that occurred on June 23, 2025 (IIO 2025-156).

Around 11:00 a.m., members of the Abbotsford Police Department responded to calls reporting that a man was behaving erratically and in was possession of a weapon in a residential area in the 32400 block of Emerald Drive.

Officers arrived and arrested the man. He was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified about the incident the day after it occurred when police became aware that the man may have sustained serious harm.

The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators, including medical records, witness statements and police reports, and determined that none of the man’s injuries resulting from the arrest meet the threshold for serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
