Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into an incident in Nelson (IIO 2025-271).
The investigation determined that around 12:30 a.m. on November 27, 2025, a man was arrested and lodged in Nelson Police Department cells.
Later that morning, the man reported feeling unwell and requested medical assistance. Emergency Health Services were called shortly after 7:00 a.m. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified shortly after the incident occurred and began an investigation.
The chief civilian director has now reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including a witness statement, medical records, radio and 911 transmissions, as well as video footage – and has determined that the man was experiencing a medical issue and did not suffer serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
