Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded an investigation into an incident in Whistler that resulted in one man suffering an injury while being arrested by the RCMP.
At approximately 9:10 p.m. on August 8, 2023, the man was stopped while driving a vehicle at Highway 99 and Lake Placid Road.
There was an interaction between the man and officers, leading to the affected person being arrested.
After being transported to the Whistler RCMP detachment, the man requested medical assistance and was assessed by Emergency Health Services before later being taken to a medical facility where subsequent tests revealed an injury.
The IIO was notified of the incident the following day and commenced an investigation.
After reviewing all the available evidence including medical records, investigators determined the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
