Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into the arrest of a man that occurred in Nelson on August 11, 2026 (IIO 2026-196).
Shortly before 11:00 p.m., a member of the Nelson Police Department arrested a youth who appeared intoxicated and became uncooperative with the officer on Hume Lane between Vernon Street and Baker Street. The youth was transported to Nelson Police Department cells.
After arrival at the cells and while in custody, the youth sustained injuries and was assessed by BC Emergency Health Services. He was then transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for additional assessment and treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The youth was later released from the hospital to his parents.
The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including police and jail records, radio calls, video footage and medical evidence – and has determined that there is no connection between police actions or inaction and the youth’s injuries.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
