IIO Deploys to Critical Incident in Dawson Creek

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirms it will be sending investigators to Dawson Creek after being notified of an officer involved shooting involving the RCMP.

According to the police, officers were responding to a report of a male causing a disturbance at a public information session being held by BC Hydro in the 500 block of Highway 2 in Dawson Creek. The male had reportedly been damaging property and disrupting the event.

Upon arrival, police encountered a masked individual outside, believed to be connected to the complaint. A confrontation occurred and the male affected person was shot. He was transported to hospital however he did not survive his injuries.

The IIO was notified immediately and will be sending a team of investigators to Dawson Creek Friday morning. The RCMP have secured and will hold the scene until the IIO arrives.  This ensures the preservation and security of the physical evidence at the scene.

IIO resources on the ground will include the Team Director, several Investigators and a Forensic Specialist.  Additional resources will be available if required.

IIO investigators will be conducting standard investigative activities including locating and interviewing any witnesses and securing video from the area.

The IIO will not be making comment on the number, gender or years of service of any involved officers, nor will the IIO release any identifying information about the deceased.

This investigation is in the early stages. No other updates will be available until the IIO investigative team arrives and takes over the scene.
