Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has deployed investigators to an incident in Surrey involving a male who died following interaction with police.

Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday March 19, 2018, a distraught male was screaming in the middle of the intersection near 10th Ave and 161 A Street in south Surrey. Police responded to the scene and attempted to arrest the male, which lead to a physical struggle.

Police say the male went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased at the scene, despite efforts to resuscitate him. The IIO was notified and initiated an investigation.

IIO investigators are on the scene and any potential witnesses of this incident are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
