IIO Deploys to In-Custody Death in Kamloops (2019-052)

Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has deployed three investigators to an in-custody death involving Kamloops RCMP.

RCMP reported that on March 12, 2019, officers arrested an intoxicated male at 9:50 p.m. following a complaint. Officers transported the male to cells. At approximately 5:46 a.m., on March 13, 2019, the male was found unresponsive and Emergency Health Services (EHS) were called to assist. EHS declared the male as deceased on arrival.

IIO investigators have been deployed and will be conducting tasks including obtaining physical evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing available video footage.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
