IIO Deploys to Incident in Chilliwack (2018-052) and In-Custody Incident in Surrey (2018-053)

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has deployed investigators to two separate incidents, in Chilliwack and Surrey.

IIO 2018-052

Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that at approximately 1:49 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018, officers were responding to reports of a dispute involving a stolen vehicle in Chilliwack. During police interaction with a female, a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed and she subsequently fell down some steps. Emergency Health Services (EHS) was called immediately and the woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

IIO investigators are currently conducting tasks related to this incident including obtaining physical evidence, designating and interviewing officers, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing medical records.

IIO 2018-053

Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that at approximately 09:38 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018, a female being held in-custody in a Surrey cell was found to be in medical distress suffering from an undetermined illness. EHS was called and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

IIO investigators are currently conducting tasks related to this incident including obtaining physical evidence, designating and interviewing officers, interviewing witnesses, reviewing medical records and examining available video footage.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
