Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. deployed investigators to Coquitlam on December 15, 2018.
On December 15, 2018, Coquitlam RCMP notified the IIO that at approximately 10:55 p.m. on December 14, officers were called to a fight between two males. Officers arrested one male for being intoxicated in public and was transported to cells.
On the morning of December 15, the male complained that his left ankle hurt and that it was caused by an officer closing the police vehicle door on his leg the previous night.
Emergency Health Services transported the male to Eagle Ridge Hospital, where initial reports suggest the male may have suffered a broken fibia.
The IIO will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Initial enquiries revealed the male reported the injury to be an accident.
The IIO is asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
