Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has deployed investigators to a police-involved incident in Fort St. John.
RCMP reported that on Monday 22, April 2019, at approximately 3:00 a.m., an officer attempted to perform a street check on a male in Fort St. John. The male fled, and the officer pursued. The officer attempted to arrest the male and a struggle ensued. The male resisted arrest and officers assisted to take the male into custody.
The male was transported to cells where officers requested Emergency Health Services and the male was subsequently transported to hospital.
Following this RCMP reported that the male had sustained serious injuries.
The IIO has commenced an investigation into the incident to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the injuries suffered by the male.
Background:
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
