Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. is investigating an incident in New Aiyansh that resulted in the death of a person.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on October 13, 2020 at approximately 7:46 p.m., an officer responded to a report of a stabbing. An individual at the scene appeared to be self-harming. The man was taken into custody with the help of bystanders after an officer used a Conducted Energy Weapon. The man was transported to a nearby medical centre for his injuries where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the death of the man. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of his death.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
