Quesnel – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has deployed to Quesnel to investigate a fatal incident.

According to Quesnel RCMP, at 4:20 a.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2017, police responded to a report of an assault involving a male and female in the 800 block of Front Street. During the course of the investigation it was determined the female victim of the alleged assault was in breach of a court-imposed condition and was subsequently arrested by officers.

The female was transported to the local detachment where Emergency Health Services examined her and recommended she be taken to a local hospital. Shortly thereafter, it was determined she should be transported to a larger hospital for treatment. The female was pronounced deceased on October 2, 2017.

Quesnel RCMP is continuing to investigate the original complaint, and have arrested two people in relation to this incident. IIO investigators are on the scene and will be conducting tasks including obtaining physical evidence, designating and interviewing officers and reviewing available video footage.

The initial focus of the IIO investigation will be to determine if there is a connection between the death of the female and the actions of police. If there is no connection then the IIO will release jurisdiction; if there is a connection, the IIO will continue investigating. Any potential witnesses of this incident are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
