Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of an incident in Vancouver involving a male who died following interaction with police.

Initial information provided to the IIO by the Vancouver Police Department suggests that on July 29, 2018, at approximately 11:06 a.m., officers were responding to a complaint of a suspicious male in the area of 1700 block E 13th Ave. Officers placed the man under arrest and he began to exhibit medical distress. EHS was called and he was taken to the hospital.

The IIO was subsequently notified that the male died in hospital, in the early hours of July 30, 2018.

While initial information from civilian witnesses suggests the interaction with police did not involve a use of force, the IIO investigation of the matter continues.

Background:

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
