Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating the circumstances around the hospitalization of a woman while in the custody of the Surrey RCMP.
RCMP report that at approximately 10:45 pm on Friday, November 5, a woman was arrested on an outstanding warrant and transported to the Surrey RCMP detachment.
On Sunday, November 7 at 1:25 am, the woman was found in her cell, unconscious and not breathing. She was taken to hospital, where she currently remains in serious condition.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
