IIO Investigation into Langley Fatal Crash Concluded

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) investigation into an Oct. 29, 2012, fatal motor vehicle crash has concluded.

On Oct. 29, 2012, Langley Traffic Services was conducting an Automated Licence Reader enforcement project combined with speed enforcement in the 24000 block of 0 Avenue near the township of Langley. At approximately 5:30 p.m., a pickup truck was identified as being related to a prohibited driver. Officers attempted to stop the pickup truck, which subsequently fled the scene.

Approximately three minutes later, a collision occurred involving the pickup truck and two other vehicles that had not been involved in the previous incident. The 47-year-old male driver of one of those vehicles was deceased at the scene.

The IIO asserted jurisdiction and conducted an investigation into the actions of the involved Langley RCMP officers. Following this investigation, Chief Civilian Director Richard Rosenthal concluded that there was no evidence that any police officer committed an offence related to this death. The IIO remains committed to its goals to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and to ensure transparency through public reporting.

The RCMP remains responsible for the concurrent investigation into the circumstances related to the driver of the pickup truck.
