Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Dawson Creek.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that at approximately 11:00 a.m. on February 15, 2022, a member of the BC Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop in the area of Highway 97 South and 283 Road. The driver, a man, was noted to have outstanding warrants and was reportedly placed under arrest without incident.

While still at the scene, the man reportedly went into medical distress. Despite life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
