Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of one man.

Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department states that this evening (February 9, 2023), police responded to a report of a man near the north end of the Granville Street Bridge behaving erratically.

There was an interaction between the man and police, and shots were fired by police. The man was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO has commenced an investigation and deployed investigators to the area. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of what occurred during the altercation between police and the deceased.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
