Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating a police-involved shooting incident that resulted in the death of one man.

Information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that at about 9:55 p.m. on December 17, 2023, police responded to a report of a man in distress in the 1600-block of Riverside Road.

There was an interaction between police and the man, and police discharged their firearms.

The man sustained gunshot-related injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident occurred and initial investigative steps will determine the details of the interaction between the man and police, and whether any police use of force was reasonable, necessary, and proportionate in the circumstances.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
