IIO is Investigating a January 2024 Arrest in Quesnel (2025-046)

Case: 2025-046 Incident Date: January 6, 2025 Location: Quesnel Detachment: Quesnel Agency: RCMP Incident Classification: Serious Harm Case Status: Open - Investigation in Progress

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an incident in Quesnel where one person sustained a serious injury while being taken into custody by members of the RCMP on January 6, 2024.

Officers initially responded to a call about a person experiencing a mental health emergency.

Police eventually located the person on Avison Avenue and detained them under the Mental Health Act. They were then taken to a hospital for assessment where it was determined they suffered an injury during the interaction with police.

The IIO was notified in February 2025 after the woman filed a complaint with the RCMP. After reviewing medical records, it has been determined the injury meets the threshold of serious harm as defined in Part 11 of the Police Act.

Investigative steps will seek to confirm the details leading up to and including the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
