Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a motor vehicle incident in Armstrong.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on October 25, 2020 at approximately 3:10 a.m., an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Highway 97A southbound between Powerhouse and McCallan roads. The vehicle, a light-coloured Mazda 6, reportedly left the road and the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman travelling as a passenger in the vehicle was transported to hospital with injuries.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction played in the death of the man.  The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of his death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
