Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting in Mackenzie where one man has died.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 2:00 p.m. on June 1, 2024, police responded to a call for service regarding a man at a business in the 400 block of Mackenzie Boulevard.
When police arrived at the business, the man was arrested. It is reported that there was an interaction between the man and police in the nearby parking lot, and shots were fired by police.
The man was transported to the hospital but was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it happened and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and reasonable under the circumstances.
