Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident in Abbotsford where one man has died.

Information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that at about 3:45 p.m. today (November 30, 2023), police responded to a report of a man with a weapon at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

When police arrived, there was an interaction between the man and police, and an officer discharged their firearm.

The man sustained a gunshot-related injury and, despite receiving immediate treatment, was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
