Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident that resulted in the death of a man in Nanaimo.

The circumstances of the incident are that at shortly before 2pm on Saturday 23rd July 2022, Nanaimo RCMP responded to a call for service on Haliburton Street between Woodland Street and Highview Terrace in Nanaimo. On arrival at the scene, there was an altercation between a responding officer and the male, during which the officer discharged his firearm. The male was struck and despite the efforts of police and responding medical personnel, the man died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred, and a team was deployed to commence an investigation.

The man’s family have been notified of his death.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
