Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating a police-involved shooting incident that occurred yesterday evening near Prince George. One man was injured. The incident involved members of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), Prince George RCMP, and Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening (May 27, 2025), a man discharged a firearm towards officers in a rural area outside of Prince George. The man reportedly fled the area in a dark coloured Volvo. No injuries were reported.
Officers later located the Volvo near a forest service road. There was an exchange of gunfire, and the driver of the Volvo, a man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and is now investigating.
There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:
- If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
- If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.
If there is a connection to police action or inaction and the person’s serious harm or death, the chief civilian director will determine if there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence has been committed.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
