Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the August 2025 death of a man in Prince George.
Information provided by a relation of the affected person states that at about 4:15 a.m. on August 24, 2025, police attended a home in the area of Village Avenue and Lillooet Street in response to a noise complaint.
When officers arrived a short time later, it is reported they attempted to speak to a man believed to be the source of the complaint and observed him holding an object or weapon in a room. The officers closed the door to the room and called for more assistance.
Police re-entered the room at about 5:30 a.m. and the man was found to be in medical distress. He was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The IIO was notified of the incident on September 22, 2025 and is now investigating.
There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:
- If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
- If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.
If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
