Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Burnaby that resulted in one man sustaining serious injuries.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 9:25 p.m. on February 27, 2023, police responded to a report regarding a domestic disturbance at a residential building in the 7600-block of 15th Street. It is reported that the only person inside the unit, a man, would not come out as directed by police, and that he may have had weapons.
About two hours later, the man exited the unit via a third-floor balcony where he was taken into custody with the assistance of a police service dog.
Medical assistance was provided, and the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The IIO has commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will examine the actions of police during the incident, and if the injuries the man sustained are related to police actions or inaction.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
