Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an incident in Campbell River where one man sustained a serious injury.
Information provided by the Campbell River RCMP states that at about 1:05 a.m. on February 11, 2024, police responded to a report of an allegedly armed man in the driveway of a residence in the 100 block of Reef Crescent.
At about 1:50 a.m., the man left the residence on a dirt bike heading south before turning east on Erickson Road. The dirt bike crashed shortly thereafter, and the man sustained a serious but not life-threatening injury.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what happened leading up to and during the incident, and what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the man’s injury.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
