Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Chase.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on October 2, 2020 at approximately 12:05 p.m., a member of the public reported to police that a young woman wearing a black sweater and dark stretchy jeans had jumped in front of their vehicle on Pine Street before walking away. An officer attended the area in an attempt to locate the individual and spoke to a young woman matching the description provided.

A few minutes later, the RCMP received another call from a member of the public indicating a young woman had reportedly jumped from the Pine Street Bridge. Emergency Health Services attended and transported the woman to a local area hospital with serious injuries.

It was quickly determined that this was the same young woman the officer had recently spoken to.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the serious harm of the woman.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
