Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Courtenay.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on October 24, 2021 at approximately 11:00 p.m., an officer with the Comox Valley RCMP detachment conducted a traffic stop of a white sedan near the intersection of Back Road and 6th Street East in Courtenay. The driver of the sedan, a man, was arrested following an interaction and transported to the RCMP detachment.

The RCMP became aware of the affected persons injury on November 1, 2021, and the IIO was subsequently notified on November 2. An investigation has been commenced.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
