Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Courtenay.

Information reported by the RCMP states at about 4:30 a.m. on April 23, 2022, police attended a residence in the 3300-block of Kentwood Road and arrested a man who was alleged to be trespassing. The man was taken to Comox detachment and lodged in cells.

At about 1:15 p.m. the same day, the man was found to be in medical distress. Assistance was provided until Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to the hospital where he died on April 24.

The IIO was notified shortly thereafter and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the man’s death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
