For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Courtenay which resulted in serious injuries to one man.
Information provided by the Comox Valley RCMP indicates that on October 5, 2022, police received a report regarding a stolen truck. An officer located the truck in the parking lot of a business, but it is reported that the driver of the truck saw the officer and, following an interaction between the truck and police vehicle, drove away eastbound on Ryan Road.
Additional officers responded and the truck was seen several other times at different locations. Eventually, officers located the truck near Prestwick Place, and it is reported that while trying to drive away, the truck left the road and subsequently came to a stop nearby.
Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the man’s injuries.
The IIO is asking any person with relevant information or video footage regarding the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
