Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Cranbrook.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on November 9, 2020 at approximately 4:45 p.m., officers attended an address in the 200-block of 16th Avenue North as part of an ongoing investigation. When two people exited the residence and reportedly tried to drive away in a vehicle, officers attempted to stop them, and shots were fired. The two individuals reportedly continued driving a short distance before being involved in a collision and fleeing on foot.

Both people were subsequently located and taken into custody, one with the assistance of a police service dog. They were transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction played in the injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
